1001
November 8th 2007 12:15
1001 is a play that knits together historical pastiche and pop culture, and moves from reality to fantasy, from terrorism to bedroom farce, and from the Big Apple to the Gaza Strip.
Popularized by literary figures that shaped Western stereotypes of the Middle East, the play mauls and energizes Scheherazade’s tales to explore the Israel-Palestine conflict, the politics of cultural identity and the West’s influence on contemporary notions of Arab culture.
This phantasmagoric riff on “A Thousand and One Arabian Nights” by way of Monty Python and Jorge Luis Borges is on now at the Baruch Performing Arts Center.
