Ellis Island Immigration Museum
June 10th 2008 02:45
Ellis Island once was the premier federal immigration station in the US, processing over 12 million immigrant steamship passengers between 1892 and 1954. Over 40 percent of America's population can trace their ancestry through Ellis Island!
After 1954, the place became abandoned and it wasn't until thirty years later that the main building was restored and the venue opened as a museum in September 1990.
Visitors are encouraged to take one of many guided/audio tours of the museum or to watch the 30 minute documentary film about the immigration experience on Ellis Island.
