Roosevelt Island Aerial Tram

August 19th 2008 01:45
Roosevelt Island Aerial Tram

The Roosevelt Island Aerial Tram is the only commuter cable car in North America and boasts stunning views of New York city while hanging 250 ft above the city.

Costing a mere $2.00 each way for adults, more than 26 million passengers have used the tram since it was opened back in 1976. Each cabin accommodates a capacity of 125 people, makes approximately 115 trips per day - and about 100 on weekends - and travels a distance of 3,100 feet at an average speed of 16 mph in 4 1/2 minutes. It rises to a maximum height of 250 feet and travels at certain points parallel and slightly above the adjacent Queensboro Bridge, linking Long Island City, Queens, and 59th Street in Manhattan.
